Forum Issue Resolved

Submitted by admin on Sun, 06/15/2008 - 06:16.

Well, sort of...

Apparently the problem lies in the theme I'm using for the website. This website runs on a Content Management System (CMS) called Drupal. There are, literally, hundreds of themes available for the system. The current theme doesn't allow any content to span across more than a certain number of pixels and will just "clip" the content at that point. Unfortunately, I really, really like this theme.

The solution is to use a different theme, but only when you're in the forum. Drupal can do this, so I have configured it that way. When you go into the forum, the header will look quite different. When you go to the main part of the site, you'll see my preferred theme again. This will do until I can find the right line of code to correct the current theme issue.

Note that this also happens in the gallery of magazines when you try to see the page in its full size. However, since the only reason I can see to view a magazine page there in all its glory is to download it, I don't see this as a problem. What you download would not be cut off as the image appears to be.

Finally!

Submitted by admin on Fri, 06/13/2008 - 08:50.

After a lot of playing around over the past day, I think I'm finally happy with the new theme. What do you all think? It's clean, well laid-out, and has a bit of a vintage feel to it. I added a new logo and to top it all off, I changed my avatar to the very luscious Gerri Diane. I've never seen her beyond this one photoset, but she's a looker. :)

BTW, bluenose, I really like your own avatar. I'm not sure why; it just appeals to me.

If you get a chance, click on "My Account" on the navigation bar on the left and click on the "Edit User Profile" tab. You can enter in a lot of information about yourself. Once you save it, you'll have a spiffy new account page just like mine.

Why No Playboy?

Submitted by admin on Sun, 05/11/2008 - 23:24.

A user just asked me if he could contribute a scanned copy of Playboy from the 1960's. I had to reluctantly turn him down.

Playboy is still being published and they often print content from their past, although I don't think I've seen anything older than, say 10-15 years when they DO dig into their archives.

It's more than that, though. There are several reasons why I don't want Playboy content on the site, and I guess now is as good a time as any to explain myself.

First, and I may get some arguments about this, but I find Playboy's stuff boring. It's TOO slick. Too airbrushed. Too much a product. The heels can't be too high; the model's face can't be too made up. The image is the girl next door, not the topless dancer at the club. Hefner had his reasons for doing this, and I can understand those reasons. But I also know that I'd prefer a Selbee magazine over a copy of Playboy any day. Give me a girl with beehive hair and a pound of makeup on her face over Wanda Johnson's daughter.

This is, however, more than personal preference. In the world of law, there's a saying about Walt Disney: You don't screw with the mouse. Disney was one of the first people to scrupulously guard his copyrights, almost to the point of paranoia. If another company's character even remotely looked like a Disney character, Uncle Walt's lawyers were all over it. Well, think of Hugh Hefner as the Walt Disney of men's magazines. Playboy defends its material with as much vigor as a rabid rabbit. So in this case, don't screw with the rabbit.

I guess those are my reasons, so please bear them in mind when being kind enough to contribute.

The Site So Far

Submitted by admin on Wed, 04/30/2008 - 01:16.

Things are really starting to gel here at VintageGirlieMags.Com. When I restarted the site, I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to find content. Ha! I've got so much waiting in the wings that I may have to start doing twice-daily updates just to keep up with the flood!

The sources are varied and in fact, a lot of you are already aware of them. Some sources are unique, and as I've been sworn to secrecy, I'll have to keep them to myself for now. Sufficed to say that I'll be gladly sharing what I have. Just keep tuned.

Some sources have been posted on Rapidshare, and I just want to take this opportunity to thank those who have posted there and to also express my dissatisfaction with Rapidshare, as a service. It takes forever to download off of them because of the wait time they impose between downloads. That's not really their fault, I guess, and I understand that they're a business. But I urge all of you, if you have magazines to share, please consider sharing them here as well. It won't take forever for people to download them, and we'd all be grateful.

This is also the time and place, I guess, to remind everyone that you can add whole albums to the "shopping" cart in the gallery and then download the whole magazine as a zip file. Pretty neat and handy, if you ask me.

Anyway, thank you all for coming. you make it all worthwhile. And remember my motto: Share & Enjoy!

Eric

Great Minds Think Alike

Submitted by admin on Tue, 04/29/2008 - 05:08.

While this site was offline, another, similar site came into being, filling the vacuum caused by our departure. Tipped off about the other site, I contacted that site's owner and we've been passing emails back and forth for a day or so. The site owner goes by the name Celebrityguy, and he's been posting a mixture of my stuff and his own since sometime last year. Celebrityguy seems like a pretty cool person, and we've decided to exchange links. You can find his site here:

http://vintagegirlymags.blogspot.com/

Celebrityguy takes a more blog-style approach to posting things, and I'm sure you'll enjoy his site.

He told me that he has the domain name VintageGirlyMags.Com. When he purchased it, he tried to get VintageGirlieMags.Com as well, but guess who owned that one! :)

Anyway, drop by his site and check it out. Highly recommended.

Also note that I have some even cooler (if that's possible) Bill Ward stuff coming your way on Tuesday.

Share & Enjoy,
Eric

my first time

Submitted by right_said_fred on Sun, 04/27/2008 - 17:33.

the first time i saw a woman naked was in one of my dad's men's magazines. i must have been 9 or so when i found his stash of mags. dad wasnt a playboy person so he had some old adams hidden in a dresser drawer. this was about 1964 so i dont remember what issue it was but i remember the adam stripes on the cover. i didnt know what a woman looked like naked so i was surprised that they didnt have a penis. lol. i came back and looked at that book a dozen times over the next four years. one day it was gone and i never asked him what happened to it.
