Cabaret Vol 02 No 05 September 1956

The newest magazine is Cabaret from September of 1956. Although it eventually became just another skin rag behind the counter, Cabaret started as a unique publication that prided itself on providing inside information on nightclubs and the burlesque circuit.
Most people today have never seen a stripper; not in the truest sense of the word. Don't confuse today's "exotic dancers" with yesterday's "srtippers". Stripping is an art form that's kept alive by a few ladies who practice this unique form of dance. It's not about a girl showing you her vagina and sticking a finger in it.
Cabaret was almost an industry magazine for strippers and club owners. It highlighted industry news with such recurring articles as "Glamour Gab", and "Backstage", then gave information about clubs in metropolitan areas in "Nighlife Guide". You could really learn a lot about the long-gone Burlesque business by reading an issue of Cabaret.
This particular issue includes the above-listed articles, and also pictorials of Monique Van Vooren, Peggy Ray, June Harlow (niece of movie star Jean Harlow), and Brandy Martin. There are also single pictures of Sally Rand, Wildcat Frenchie, Revere & Roche (a strange "girl & gorilla" act), Do May (one of the few Native American strippers), Pat Hobson, and Evelyn West and her "$50,000 Treasure Chest" (yes, THAT chest). There's even an article on the then-hot band "Bill Haley & His Comets".
So sit back and enjoy the 1956 nightlife of Cabaret.

Backgrounds/Overviews Appreciated
Thanks for this mag, but you know what I really appreciate, is the background or overview insights that you add with each posting. Giving us the mag and some context in the overall history of girlie mags is much enjoyed. There is so little information out about these mags that I sometimes like the extra you provide more than the mag itself.

Wow, thanks, Cyber Sleuth!
Wow, thanks, Cyber Sleuth! You made my day by saying that. I'm never sure if anyone even cares about the history of these things, but I love every little nugget I can dig up.
