Images Added: All Abroad with Bill Ward

I just added 200+ Bill Ward cartoons. Look for the new "Cartoon" album on the main gallery page. I have more than that and will be uploading them shortly.

Bill Ward was originally a comic book artist. He followed the great Reed Crandall as artist on Quality Comics' Blackhawk feature in both "Blackhawk" and "Modern Comics". When Quality folded and sold their characters to DC, Ward decided to strike out on his own as a commercial artist. He gravitated toward men's magazines in general and Abe Goodman's "Humorama" in particular. His realistic images quickly gave way to an amazing cartoon style that was instantly recognizable wherever you saw it.

Initially, Ward worked in a combination of pencil and charcoal. He divided his work into two styles he called his "A" and "B" styles. He worked harder and longer on his "A style" stuff, so he was able to charge more for it. His "B" stuff went to the cheaper publishers. Some of his work was remarkable; a blend that looked, at first glance, to be fairly realistic. Yet when you examined it closer, you realized that no one really looked like that; it was all blended into a unique illusion.

As time went on, Ward's work became increasingly fetishistic. I don't think I ever saw anything that showed penetration, but his women became so top-heavy that they couldn't have really stood, let alone walked. His tastes also changed, from gloves and heels to whips and chains.

I guess everyone has their favorite era of Ward's work, and mine definitely falls into the time of his "A" and "B" art, with his impossibly-long-legged vamps with cigarette holders clenched in bee-stung lips and his bimbos with their odd logic and vacant eyes.

You'll find a bit of both here. Enjoy!
